Climate
Hoohah has a cool, moist maritime climate. Overcast skies or light drizzle are common conditions but there is also enough rain - up to 70 inches annually - to create our lush, green woods.
Summer is the drier part of the year. On sunny days temperatures can soar above 75 degrees F., but a 50 - 70 degree range is the norm.
Warm ocean waters keep fall to spring temperatures at a moderate 28 - 40 degrees F., with perhaps a dip below 0 degrees during the winter.
Fall is typically wet and windy; winter precipitation often turns to snow.
Clothing To Bring
Waterproof footwear. It's a local joke that the town's 'dress code' is a pair of brown neoprene boots! But besides boots, casual, comfortable clothing is what to bring.
Plan for dressing in layers that you can put on or take off to match the day's weather. In summer, add to your lightweight wardrobe a water-repellent jacket, hat, and long pants.
If you are going to be out on the water, these items should be waterproof ones. From fall to spring, mittens, scarf, hat and heavy socks are needed to keep
you warm, along with long-sleeved tops and warm outer wear made preferably with fiberfill instead of down. Fiberfill dries more quickly and keeps you warmer when wet.
Daylight
Hoonah enjoys up to 19 hours of light per day during May, June and July. In winter, sunlight at the solstice is approximately 6 hours. One of the fringe benefits of winter darkness
is the perfect backdrop it makes for our spectacular displays of aurora borealis.
Time Zone
Hoonah is in the Alaska Time Zone which us 1 hour earlier than Pacific Time (Seattle) and 4 hours earlier than Eastern Time (New York).
