Hoonah, Alaska, is located on the northeast shore of Chichagof Island, 40 air miles west of Juneau, Alaska's capital city, and 80 air miles north of Sitka. Hoonah is accessible by air and sea only, which makes getting here part of the adventure!

by Air
Alaska Airlines [1-800-252-7522] provides daily jet service to Juneau from Anchorage and Seattle.

From Juneau, small aircraft (up to nine passengers) fly across Icy Strait and land in twenty minutes on the 3000 foot paved runway at Hoonah Airport. Three companies provide this flight service:
  • Air Excursions (907) 789-5591
  • L.A.B. (907) 789-9160 or (907) 789-9181
  • Wings of Alaska (907)789-0790
L.A.B. and Wings of Alaska have regularly scheduled flights to Hoonah; all three airline companies offer charter services, to fly at your convenience. Transport of baggage weighing up to fifty pounds is included in the ticket price on regularly scheduled flights, but for a fee additional weight may be carried. Local advice says to pack light and use smaller bags such as daypacks or duffels. And don't forget your camera because you can get some great aerial shots on the way over!
Hoonah's new floatplane dock is handicapped accessible.

  • by Sea
The Alaska Marine Highway (800) 382-0229 provides year-round ferry service for foot passengers and vehicles. Foot passengers are allowed up to 100 pounds of baggage; vehicles are charged by length with no weight limit. Travel time between Juneau and Hoonah is three hours and fifteen minutes, so there's ample time to relax as you take in the scenery, watch for whale activity and enjoy the ride.

If you plan to arrive in Hoonah by boat, please call the Harbormaster at (907) 945-3670 to make moorage arrangements. We'll admit that, yes, getting here is part of the adventure. But that part is only the beginning!
